Instructor should explain the following terms.  He or she should utilize maps and other visual aids to make clear the way land ownership is described in Colorado.

Also explain:

1.        How Sections are numbered  (1-36).

2.        How many acres are in each division  (640, 160, 40, 10, etc.).

3.        What is an adjusting section (with more or less than 640 acres) and why.

 

Explain “chain” measurement.

                One chain = 66 feet
                80 chains = one mile
                10 square chains = 1 acre

                Give an example of calculating the area of a rectangle using chain measurement.
                    “ A thinned area is 4 chains by 7 chains or 28 square chains.   Area equals 2.8
                      acres.                                  

Discuss pacing as a means of quick and approximate measurement.
