BASIC INSECT AND DISEASE MANAGEMENT

 

The instructor should provide information on the insects and diseases that are common to the local area, the host species and control measures for each problem pest.  Control emphasis should be on forest management practices rather than chemicals for long range solutions to the pest problelms.

Briefly list the types of damage caused by tree pests.

6.        Nuisance or insignificant.

 

Point out that a nuisance insect such as Cooley spruce gall aphid to the production of  sawlogs can be a significant deformity problem in the production of Douglas-fir Christmas trees.  Use other examples if this one doesn’t fit your area.

 

Cover the major insect and disease pests.  For example, mountain pine beetle and dwarf-mistletoe.
