Jan. 26 - Community Meeting: Establishing a Biomass Sort Yard in the Nederland area

Contact: Ryan Ludlow, Forestry Education and Outreach Coordinator, Land Use Department at 720-564-2641 or Barb Halpin, Public Information Officer, 303-441-1622
(Boulder County, Colo.) – Boulder County, in partnership with the Town of Nederland and the Indian Peaks Forest Alliance, has scheduled a forest health community meeting on January 26 to gather input on two potential locations for a community biomass sort yard in the Nederland area. This meeting serves as a follow-up to the community meeting held in December.

Over the next several years bark beetles will have a profound effect on Boulder County’s mountain backdrop and forested ecosystems. In an effort to help private landowners deal with a multitude of dead, hazardous trees caused by extensive beetle-kill in the area, Boulder County plans to open a community-use facility next summer in the Nederland area that will accept limbed trees and branches at no cost to residents.

What:      Community Meeting about establishing a community biomass sort yard near the Town of Nederland - meeting agenda
When:     7-9 p.m., Monday, Jan. 26, 2009
Where:    Nederland Community Center, 750 Highway 72 North

Boulder County and the Town of Nederland have been working together to locate a suitable site and have selected two potential locations: One of the sites is located on county-owned property adjacent to the Boulder Valley School District’s bus barn on Ridge Road. The other site is located on Reynolds Ranch Open Space, a County Parks and Open Space property on Magnolia Road. At this meeting information will be provided about why each site is being considered as well as time for public questions and comments on the proposed sites. Boulder County will also outline the public process involved in finalizing a site location and the tentative timeframe for opening a community biomass sort yard in the Nederland area.

If you have questions or comments about community biomass sort yards, forestry and/or bark beetles feel free to visit: www.bouldercounty.org/foresthealth or email Ryan Ludlow at pinebeetle@bouldercounty.org or call 720-564-2641.  Ryan serves as Boulder County Land Use’s Forestry Education and Outreach Coordinator. He is available to meet with residents and provide various tools and strategies for managing private forested ecosystems to help mitigate wildfires, disease and insect outbreaks.
