HOW A TREE GROWS

The way in which this topic is presented is very much up to the instructor.  The intent is to give the Tree Farmer a simple knowledge of the factors influencing tree growth and mortality.

Subjects to consider for presentation are:

                -heartwood

                -sapwood

.

                -annual growth or growth rings

.

                -cambium layer, location and function

.

                -bark functions

.

                -terminal buds and heighth  growth

.

                -growth stages (seedling, sapling, etc.)

.

                -influences of fire (scars) and mechanical damage

                -root development

.

                -basic requirement for growth (space, water, nutrients)
